Dr Veronica Calarco

Veronica Calarco is an Australian artist living in Wales. In the 1990s, she completed a degree in printmaking and a postgraduate degree in weaving at the Institute of Arts, Australia National University. After university, she worked as a community artist in remote areas of Australia such as the Kimberleys, in north Western and central Australia where she managed an Aboriginal Art Centre. She has completed diverse residencies, such as at Parliament House, ACT, where she explored how workers related to the building and Grindell’s Hut, Flinders Ranges, Stone Quarry Hill Art Park, New York and Sauerbier House, Adelaide, where she explored language and the notion of country. Veronica first came to Wales in 2004 and began living between Wales and Australia, finally settling permanently in Wales in 2012. She received an A level in Welsh in 2013 and the Dan Lynn James Scholarship to study Welsh in 2014. In 2015, she founded Stiwdio Maelor, an artist residency program. In 2021, Veronica completed a PhD in printmaking at the School of Art, Aberystwyth University, titled ‘This is a language warning’ and researched endangered and minority languages through the notion of country. Veronica has recently been awarded a Joy Welch research grant. This research project is title ‘The Land as Other’ and will examine the way Veronica, and other artists in Wales respond to the environmental and rewilding movements and the positioning of land by outsiders as other - a visual / playground commodity (tourism). Veronica is a lecturer in printmaking at the Aberystwyth University and a co-director of Aberystwyth Printmakers.
Artist o Awstralia sy'n byw yng Nghymru yw Veronica Calarco. Yn y 1990au, cwblhaodd radd mewn gwneud printiau a gradd ôl-raddedig mewn gwehyddu yn Sefydliad y Celfyddydau, Prifysgol Genedlaethol Awstralia. Ar ôl y brifysgol, bu’n gweithio fel artist cymunedol mewn ardaloedd anghysbell yn Awstralia fel y Kimberleys, yng ngogledd Orllewin a chanol Awstralia lle bu’n rheoli Canolfan Gelf Gynfrodorol. Mae hi wedi cwblhau preswyliadau amrywiol, megis yn Senedd-dy, ACT, lle bu’n archwilio sut roedd gweithwyr yn gysylltiedig â’r adeilad a Grindell’s Hut, Flinders Ranges, Parc Celf Stone Quarry Hill, Efrog Newydd a Sauerbier House, Adelaide, lle bu’n archwilio iaith a’r syniad o wlad. Daeth Veronica i Gymru gyntaf yn 2004 a dechreuodd fyw rhwng Cymru ac Awstralia, gan ymgartrefu o’r diwedd yng Nghymru yn 2012. Derbyniodd Safon Uwch yn y Gymraeg yn 2013 ac Ysgoloriaeth Dan Lynn James i astudio Cymraeg yn 2014. Yn 2015, sefydlodd Stiwdio Maelor, rhaglen breswyl artistiaid. Yn 2021, cwblhaodd Veronica PhD mewn gwneud printiau yn yr Ysgol Gelf, Prifysgol Aberystwyth, dan y teitl ‘Dyma rybudd iaith’ ac ymchwiliodd i ieithoedd sydd mewn perygl a lleiafrifoedd drwy’r syniad o wlad. Yn ddiweddar dyfarnwyd grant ymchwil Joy Welch i Veronica. Teitl y prosiect ymchwil hwn yw ‘The Land as Other’ a bydd yn archwilio’r ffordd y mae Veronica, ac artistiaid eraill yng Nghymru yn ymateb i’r symudiadau amgylcheddol ac ailweirio a lleoliad tir gan bobl o’r tu allan fel arall - nwydd gweledol / maes chwarae (twristiaeth). Mae Veronica yn ddarlithydd mewn gwneud printiau ym Mhrifysgol Aberystwyth ac yn gyd-gyfarwyddwr Gwneuthurwyr Printiau Aberystwyth.
